Joy in my Spring Garden

Backyard Garden

The joy of the wildlife in the gardens this week was felt deeply by me. We had the privilege of seeing the cottontails courting so that means baby bunnies or kits as they are called.  The snow last week did not stop my greens from persevering.  they are all ding well and I should have some small leaves to harvest end of this week or early next week.  I was able to be outside within 10 feet of this one while she was eating for a whole and then she decided to come closer to me.  Maybe she wanted to be featured on the blog this week.

This beautiful wooly bear caterpillar was very active in the garden this week.  Sunning herself on this rock and moving around quickly to find the right spot to spend time.  She will become an Isabella Tiger Moth.  Hardy to many cold climates they are frequently seen in the fall in my gardens. Not sure what they prefer to eat that I seem to have,: do like to have them in the yard.  Please not not to pick them up, the hairs on them may cause reaction on your skin.  sometimes they are in the veggie garden.  planted the snow peas this past weekend.  One of my favorite things is to eat the fresh ones right out o the garden.

What is a garden without flowers you ask?  two of my easy to grow perennials in the garden.  Forget me nots, Myosotis or scorpion grass & primrose, Primula vulgaris.  they are  greeting me & the warm sunshine in the backyard flower bed in the early morning.  Fantastic way to start the day is a walk thru the yard and smell the flowers with a hot mug of green tea.  Spent time laying some cedar mulch into s few of the flower beds to prevent weeds taking over the areas. This is easiest to do in early spring before the weed seeds germinate.

Women Build 2021

We are happy for some rain for my flowers and vegetables for the spring season. we are below normal for rainfall.  newest transplant to the veggie garden is the broccoli yesterday.  Kale, collards and mustard doing well. had my second large harvest of about a quart of small tatsoi mustard as shown here full size.

the flowers and perennials seems to be doing well this year.  We had several rabbits overwinter in my yard so we were not sure what spring would look like.  My blue fescue seem to be happy for the trim on their dead leaves by the bunnies.

Working on some new pieces and a few commissions this month.  Hope to be able to showcase a new line for summer.  my copper pieces we well received.  Working on some for the Women Build project as part of my team, Calico Hammers.    this brooch was a special fundraising piece for Women Build several years ago.  For the rest of the month only they are available is Sterling and copper for $49   Perfect Mother's Day gift.  Please mention this promotion Limited Edition Mom Brooch when ordering your brooch.

One and Done for Spring 2021

It had been difficult to construct the blog for the week.  So exciting and scary to have had my Johnson & Johnson vaccine last Monday.  Yes I am One and Done.  As a woman and small business owner, felt it was a necessary step for me and my family.  We have all lost so much during this past year of the pandemic.  I need to be focused on my family and moving forward.  Life does not stop: for this pandemic or anything else.  Time is a constant though it may not seem that way in the recent past.

Yes more greens are in the veggie garden.  this is Red kale and it will be delicious.  I harvested most of the Mustard planted late winter in the greenhouse because it wanted to  bloom instead of grow leaves.  Thank to the Climate Emergency we live in now which showed itself as the extremely warm spring so far. Proud and happy gardener because I grow my plants from seed.  My grandma would be proud.

Having some much needed rain here in this Rochester, NY garden.  Happy for the moisture and the rest form the hard work outside this past few weeks. My you enjoy yur labors as I have recently.
