June is ending, summer is here

 Lapidary and the garden

Happy Monday all. heat wave and summer is here in ROC  As a lapidary it is almost impossible to slice or slab any rocks because of this heat.  On the other hand, good part is I can cut cabochons because that equipment is inside in my basement.

This is a snowflake obsidian cabs.  Obsidian is a volcanic natural glass  there are several varieties of it that I have as rough and cabochons.

The heat might be stressing the plants though we are keeping them well watered.   We use recycled rubber soaker hoses to water the vegetables and most of the pants in our gardens.  They conserve moisture by placing the water where it is needed at the roots of the plants,  none is wasted as with sprinklers.  As in the past years of drought, the soaker hoses allow us a harvest and not having to remove dead plants. Fingers crossed this short term heat wave and dry does not turn into an all season event for the summer.

This is yellow turquoise that I cut and set in sterling silver. I love the play of colors on the stone and the final design to show off the shape of the cabochon.

This is a natural Aquamarine from a mine in New Hampshire.  I did not cut this beauty but the fact is is a USA gem made me purchase several cabs in a few different gemstones from the mine owner.

garden dirt soon

Happy for the arrival of spring this past weekend. The official start of SPRING!  Spring Equinox began 3.20.21 at 5:37am on Saturday.

Within two weeks I will have greens in the veggie garden.  So excited for digging in the dirt and beginning the season.  This is a prior year to show the beauty of the lettuce & snow peas in my backyard garden.  There is no better feeling for me than digging the soil and planting my homegrown seedling into the earth.  Mother Nature provides such a great bounty of sunshine and cooler temperatures.  My greens thrive in the wet and cool temps.  Should have a salad harvest by the middle of April.  Yes I transplanted some mustard today.

Beautiful butterflies to remind us how fantastic the warm season is.  Hello first full week of Spring 2021. Looking forward to the return of the toads, dragonflies, butterflies, frogs, & migratory birds to my backyard garden.

What is a Commission

What is a Commission and why do you want one?  Have you looked for a special gift and not been able to find what you want at the store?  Talking to an artist allows your idea to be created.  Commission is another way or saying special order.  Half of my work is done this way.  Simply put when asked to make something special for a person that is not a piece that is currently made.

Bridal Commissions

The pieces here speak for themselves.  Showing both Sterling Silver and 14 karat gf work. The metal, color & style were choice of the buyer.   One winter wedding and two summer weddings shown.

Commission Questions

The basic information you need to place an order or request a commission is below.

  1. Basic budget ($50 or $300)
  2. What you are looking for
  3.  How quickly do you need it

Please note all commissions  are final sales & require deposit to begin the work.

Commissions come in all forms:  Social Justice

Yes it is Spring

As an avid gardener my spring plants for the veggie garden do not wait for the frost to go away.  They are large enough for transplant but my muddy garden is not ready for them.  There are both plus and minus to  homegrown plants.   My tomatoes are six inches tall right now & they smell fantastic.   We may try to remove & dry some of the soil to help them.

My giveback at this time is hosting an artist chat once a week.  Started last week.  Sure feels good to connect with like minded creatives right now.  Hard to be in isolation as an artist. Making a few new wearable works of wire art.

Working on adding more of my gemstones & finished jewelry to the website.  Time consuming to edit all the pics need to show the detail in the pieces.  Please take a look and let me know what you like.  Have some quarts points on FB and a few pewter beads for you to do your own DIY jewelry.  There are kits from $10 each for earrings.

Find memories of sisterhood from the trip to DC & our Womens' March on Washington 1/21/17.  Met some great ladies and felt a sense of sisterhood and love from the gathering.

International Womens Day

Yesterday was International Women's Day, how did you celebrate?  I reflected on some fantasict women I admire such as Susan B Anthony, Elizabeth Warren, & Kamala Harris.

As we move thru this month, I am beyond excited. It is almost SPRING,  10 MORE DAYS!!! This lettuce from 2017 says it best.

Elizabeth Warren quote,"Choose to fight only righteous fights, because then when things get tough - and they will - you will know that there is only option ahead of you: nevertheless, you must persist "  Her passion is resonating through out these United States of America in the hearts & minds of all of us women. She had the courage to do something some only dream of  run for President of the USA.

As this Mustard in my greenhouse shows, it wants to grow despite the fact it is winter.  The seed was planted last fall and is growing now that it is warm.  I watered it so it can become a full plant &  be large enough for a salad soon.   Followers of this blog know by heart my favorite Susan B quote, " Failure is Impossible "  I feel that here in this green. I did not expect it to have survived the winter but it persisted.

My indoor greens are only sprigs right now.  Three to six weeks  until they can be planted into the veggie garden.  Hopefully the peas can be planted by the end of March like last year.

New Direction for Panda Wear - Stone DIY

New direction and focus for Panda Wear...what is this about you ask?

I am a lapidary which means I hand cut my own stones.  Having enjoyed cutting gemstone for many years, there is a surplus of stones I am unable to use right away. Also, there is a surplus of rough stone - which is the rocks before they are cut into cabochons.  The rocks started to accumulate (pile up) around my home.    To make space,  I decided to start selling the extras.

Above is a Unakite boulder in the quarry where I have collected some rough in NY state.  The travel mug in this pic is about 10" tall to show perspective. The boulders are over 3 feet tall.  The blue rocks on the left side are mostly calcite.

Steps to make a cabochon
  1. select a rock
  2. cut a slab form the rock
  3. decide  the shape of the cabochon & draw it
  4. trim the slice around the lines
  5.  dop the trimmed piece
  6. start cutting the cab
  7. polish the cab
Michigan Kona dolomite slab.  This is a piece of the selected rock cut into a slice.

Texas graveyard point agate slab.  This is a slab or a slice from the rock. the slice is the second step to making the rock into cabochons.    Imagine the rock as a home made loaf of bread cut into slices.  They can be cut whatever thickness I desire. Clear or transparent rough works best cut thick to show the beauty in the stone when finished.

In my work, I have bought nice quality supplies for many years. Having bought the high quality beads and cabochons for years I believe I have an idea what other designers are looking for.  Your referrals of friends whom are jewelry designers or jewelry store owners are always appreciated.   Most of my cabochon sales are to other jewelry designers right now.   A few are sales to collectors. Yes, I still sell my OOAK jewelry.  It is just that my focus is on the gemstones right now

On the right, a piece of the Unakite I collected as a finished cabochon.  I went through all of the 7 steps above with this rock.

Below is a Montana Moss Agate cabochon ready to be set into a piece of jewelry. This is a transparent stone and the light is reflected best when the back of the piece is left open.

My cabochons are free form which meas they are not round, or oval like most of the ones I see for sale.  This makes them unique and OOAK.
OOAK means One of a Kind. Cabochons are also called cabs.

Please feel free to ask any questions about the process of stone cutting or making cabochons that you have.   I have taught wire wrapping and jewelry making for years.  I also taught my boyfriend to cut cabs. He is a natural and is a better cutter than I am.

Introduction

Panda Wear is my jewelry business.  My name is Kim and I am a lapidary as well as a jewelry designer.  In this blog you will learn about my process and my inspiration.  My art pieces are in precious metals and stone.

Below is an example of a custom set for a specific event.

This set is Emerald Envy, an earring and pendant set.  It was a silent auction donation for a large local fundraiser at an awards party.    It was well received at the event.  The metal is Sterling silver and I hand cut and polished the stone in the pendant.  The focal point of the earrings are green crystals and Swarovski crystals on the two pair which take the piece from daytime into evening wear.
